Konoba Parangal

Konoba Parangal, a family-run konoba on the mandrač in the centre of Novigrad, here since 2016. Fish, meat off the grill and pasta, on a terrace under old olive trees.

Our story

Konoba Parangal on the Novigrad mandrač

Konoba Parangal stands on the mandrač in Novigrad, Istria, at Mandrač ul. 12. The mandrač is the town's old small harbour, and boats still lie in it today. The tables are outside, on a terrace under old olive trees, facing the harbour and the sea. The konoba has been open since 2016, and the cooking is home-style, fish and meat alike.

At Konoba Parangal in Novigrad the fish is done three classic ways: off the grill, baked in a salt crust, or in buzara sauce, with chard and potatoes beside it. Next to the fish stands a whole run of meat: beef steak, Istrian-style pork loin, skewers, pork ribs, ćevapi and pljeskavica off the grill. Pasta is a chapter of its own: fuži, the traditional pasta of Istria, with truffles and raw ham, then gnocchi, spaghetti and tagliatelle.

Istrian wines are poured at Konoba Parangal, Kozlović, Kabola and Deklić among them.

A stone arch with the name Parangal carved into it, above a painted view of Novigrad.

What the word parangal means

A parangal is an old fishing tool: a long main line carrying a row of shorter side lines, each ending in a hook, one of the oldest ways of fishing in the Adriatic. Konoba Parangal in Novigrad carries that name.

Who Konoba Parangal is for

Konoba Parangal in Novigrad is a plain konoba on the mandrač, not fine dining. The menu is wide and traditional: whole fish off the scale, fish and squid off the grill, shellfish in buzara sauce, meat off the grill, pasta and salads. The tables are outside under the olive trees and they fill up in the evening in season, so it is best to call for a table. Anyone after a several-course tasting menu or a wine list run by a sommelier will not find it here.

Very nice Konoba not far from the Marina. Besides very good food they are really great people. Our 3 years old daughter fell down from one of the benches and had a large bump. They were absolutely caring and did everything to help us. Thank you so much!

jedes Jahr wenn wir in Istrien sind, ist mindestens 1x Essen in der Konoba Parangal Pflicht. Es ist alles sehr lecker und immer frisch zubereitet. Preis/Leistung ist wie es sein sollte.

Every year when we are in Istria, eating at Konoba Parangal at least once is a must. Everything is very tasty and always freshly prepared. Value for money is exactly as it should be.

Bel posto, camerieri molto gentili e buon cibo. Menu ricco e vario. Siamo tornati dopo tre anni appositamente per lo squisito filetto al tartufo!

A lovely place, very kind waiters and good food. A rich and varied menu. We came back after three years especially for the exquisite truffle fillet!

Uskrs, jugo dere s kišom Sklonili se u konobu Parangal na piće Aperol i pivo . Na odlasku bili smo počašćeni i nismo morali platiti piće. Lijepi ambijent uz samo more i ljubazne konobarice. Ovim putem se zahvaljujemo i sigurno ćemo ponovno doći

Easter, the south wind tearing down with rain. We took shelter in Konoba Parangal for a drink, an Aperol and a beer. On our way out we were treated and did not have to pay for the drinks. A lovely setting right by the sea and kind waitresses. We thank them this way and we will certainly come again.

Tako dobre ribje plošče že dolgo nisem jedel. Dobro založena plošča in odličen okus. Na koncu pa še brezplačna žganica. Tudi postrežba in ambient je odličen. Samo pohvale, se še zagotovo vrnemo.

It has been a long time since I ate such a good fish platter. A well stocked platter and excellent flavour. And a free rakija at the end. The service and the setting are excellent too. Nothing but praise, we will definitely be back.
